Noreen Bodman, Executive Director of
Crossroads of the American Revolution National Heritage Area, and Candy Streed,
Program & Partnership Director of Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage
Area, will share their experiences with how their national heritage areas have
responded to natural disasters.
In 2008, eastern Iowa experienced days
of flooding that resulted from heavy snow melt combined with heavy rain.
Despite having their own offices flooded, Silos & Smokestacks National
Heritage Area mobilized to connect partners to resources and inform visitors
about closings and contact information for their partner sites.
This past year, Hurricane Sandy took a
toll on many of the special places that make up Crossroads of the American
Revolution National Heritage Area. Drawing on her past experience with disaster
response, Noreen Bodman gathered together resources to help partners in
Crossroads begin to recover from the devastating hurricane.
Join us in hearing about the lessons
Noreen and Candy learned surviving natural disasters, including what worked,
what didn’t, what they would do differently, what they wish they had been prepared
for, and some ideas about preparing for a disaster before it hits your heritage
area.
